What impressions and engagement rate can — and cannot — tell you

Impressions and engagement rate answer different questions. Treating either one as a universal score can lead to bad decisions.

Impressions: how much distribution occurred

Impressions are useful for understanding reach and distribution. They do not prove that people read the post carefully, agreed with it, or took a valuable action.

Engagement rate: response relative to exposure

A transparent version is total engagements divided by impressions, multiplied by 100. The result depends on what you count as an engagement, so use the same definition whenever you compare periods or posts.

Why both matter

High impressions with a lower rate may still create more total interactions. A high rate on a tiny audience may be encouraging without proving broad appeal. Review raw totals and rates together.

Avoid fake precision

Do not claim a percentile, creator ranking, or industry benchmark unless you actually have a representative comparison dataset. Your own historical baseline is often more useful and easier to verify.
